GenCare local guide to Los Angeles, title banner for an article on 10 must-see places to visit in LA

10 Must-See Places in Los Angeles | A Local Guide | GenCare

June 17, 202621 min read

We have called the Los Angeles area home for a very long time. GenCare has been based here and serving local businesses since 1986, and our office sits in Glendale at 3524 Ocean View Blvd, a short hop from some of the most iconic spots in Southern California. Over the years, our team has spent plenty of weekends exploring the city we work in, and we get asked the same question often enough that we decided to write it down: if someone is visiting Los Angeles or has just moved here, where should they go first?

So this guide is a little different from what we usually publish. We spend our days helping Los Angeles businesses with managed IT services, security, and the everyday technology that keeps them running. But we also love this city, and we wanted to share the places we send friends, family, and new team members. Below are ten favorites, with a real sense of what each one is like, why it is worth your time, how to get there from our Glendale office, and the practical details that make a visit go smoothly.

A quick note on directions and details: every route below starts from our office at 3524 Ocean View Blvd, Glendale, CA 91208. The drive times are rough off-peak estimates. This is Los Angeles, so traffic can easily double between about 7 to 10 in the morning and 3 to 7 in the evening. Hours, ticket prices, and parking fees also change from season to season, so treat the "Good to know" lines as a starting point and confirm the current details on each official site before you head out.

1. Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory - Southern California's gateway to the cosmos!

Perched on the south slope of Mount Hollywood, Griffith Observatory is the view that says Los Angeles. From its terraces, you look out over the entire basin, with the downtown skyline to the southeast, the Pacific glinting on a clear day to the west, and the Hollywood Sign sitting just across the canyon, close enough to fill a photo. It is one of those rare landmarks that locals love as much as visitors do, and a big part of the reason is that the building and grounds are free to enter, a genuine gift in a city where most attractions come with a ticket price.

Inside, the observatory earns its name. The Samuel Oschin Planetarium runs shows under one of the finest domes in the country, walking you through the night sky, the life of stars, and the scale of the universe with live narration. The exhibit halls are hands-on and thoughtfully done, covering everything from the phases of the moon to a working Tesla coil and a Foucault pendulum that quietly demonstrates the rotation of the Earth. After dark, the real magic begins: the public telescopes on the roof and lawn are free to look through, staffed by volunteers who will happily point you at Saturn's rings or the craters of the moon. On a typical clear evening, you can see more through that telescope than most people see in a lifetime.

The observatory also sits inside Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America, so it doubles as a hiking destination. Trails of every difficulty radiate out from the area, and the walk up to the observatory itself is a popular workout with a reward at the top. Sunset is the magic hour, when the city lights flicker on below you, though it is also the busiest time for parking, so patience helps.

2. The Getty Center

How The Iconic Getty Center Came to Be

The Getty Center is two great experiences stacked into one visit. There is the art, a world-class collection of European paintings, drawings, sculpture, decorative arts, and photography that includes works by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet, and Cezanne. And there is the place itself, a gleaming hilltop campus of travertine stone and glass designed by architect Richard Meier, reached by a small driverless tram that climbs the hill from the parking structure and sets the tone before you even arrive. The combination of serious art and stunning setting is what makes the Getty feel less like a museum visit and more like a day out.

Once you are up top, the views are half the reason to come. On a clear day you can see from the downtown towers all the way to the ocean, and the campus is designed to frame those vistas at every turn. The Central Garden, created by artist Robert Irwin, is a living artwork in its own right, a spiraling walk through changing plants and a maze of azaleas floating in a pool. It changes with the seasons, so no two visits look quite the same. The galleries themselves are arranged across several pavilions, which makes it easy to wander based on what catches your eye rather than marching through in order.

What surprises many first-time visitors is the price, because general admission is free. You pay only for parking, which makes the Getty one of the best-value cultural outings in the city. That also means it can get busy, especially on weekends and during special exhibitions, so an early arrival pays off. The on-site cafe and restaurant are better than typical museum fare, and the outdoor terraces are a fine place to sit with a coffee and take in the view. Give yourself time; this is not a place to rush.

3. Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood™ | Coasters, Tours & Magic

Universal Studios Hollywood is where the movies you grew up with come to life, and it is a full day out in the best sense. Part working film studio and part theme park, it offers a mix you will not find anywhere else: thrill rides and immersive lands on one side, and a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how films and television get made on the other. For first-time visitors and families, it is one of the most memorable days the city has to offer, even if it sits at the higher end of the price range.

The headline attraction for many is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a remarkably detailed recreation of Hogsmeade village complete with the towering Hogwarts castle, the Forbidden Journey ride inside it, and shops selling butterbeer and interactive wands. Elsewhere in the park, you will find rides themed to Jurassic World, the Mario universe in Super Nintendo World, the Transformers, and more, each one a big-budget production in its own right. But the experience that ties the place back to its roots is the World-Famous Studio Tour, a tram ride through the actual backlot where countless films and shows have been shot. You roll past famous sets and facades, survive a few staged surprises, and get a real sense of the machinery behind the magic.

Because it is a major theme park, a little strategy goes a long way. Tickets are cheaper and entry is smoother when you buy online in advance, and arriving right at opening lets you hit the most popular rides before the lines build. An Express ticket costs more but can save hours on a crowded day. The park spans an upper and lower lot connected by a long series of escalators, so comfortable shoes are a must, and you will want to plan meal breaks rather than waiting until you are starving in a long line.

4. Walt Disney Concert Hall

Walt Disney Concert Hall | Music in Downtown, Los Angeles

Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of the most recognizable buildings in Los Angeles, a swirl of curved stainless-steel sails that catches the light and stops people in their tracks. Completed in 2003, it is the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and it sits at the heart of the downtown Music Center complex on Grand Avenue. Even if you never set foot inside, the exterior alone is worth a stop, and it has become one of the city's favorite spots for photographers thanks to the way its metal panels frame the sky and the surrounding skyline.

Step inside and the building reveals its real purpose. The main auditorium is widely considered one of the finest concert halls in the world, with warm, vineyard-style seating that wraps around the stage and acoustics that musicians rave about. There is genuinely not a bad seat in the house. The LA Phil's season runs the gamut from classical masterworks to film scores performed live and contemporary programming, and catching an evening performance here is one of the great cultural experiences the city offers. The building glows at night, and the energy of a full house in that space is something a recording can never capture.

You do not need a concert ticket to appreciate it, though. The hall offers free self-guided audio tours of its public spaces on many days, letting you explore the lobbies, the gardens, and the architecture at your own pace. Tucked behind the building is the Blue Ribbon Garden, a quiet rooftop oasis with a fountain made of broken Delft porcelain, a peaceful surprise in the middle of downtown. Because it sits within walking distance of The Broad, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Grand Central Market, it pairs naturally with a full downtown day rather than a single quick stop.

5. The Broad

The Broad Museum, Los Angeles - Architect: Diller Scofidio + Renfro | Inexhibit

Right across Grand Avenue from Disney Hall stands The Broad, a contemporary art museum that has become one of the most talked-about cultural destinations in the city since it opened in 2015. The building itself is a statement, wrapped in a porous, honeycomb-like concrete shell that its architects call the veil, which filters daylight into the galleries while concealing the vault where much of the collection is stored. From the street it looks like nothing else downtown, and that bold design is a fitting front door for what is inside.

The collection, built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, is a who's who of postwar and contemporary art. You will find major works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, and Kara Walker, among many others, displayed across a bright top-floor gallery reached by a tunnel-like escalator that has become a photo moment in itself. The single most sought-after experience is Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room, a small chamber lined with mirrors and lights that creates the illusion of endless space. You get only a brief moment inside, but it is unforgettable, and it draws long lines, so it requires its own separate timed reservation that tends to go quickly.

The best part for visitors on a budget is that general admission is free, which keeps The Broad accessible in every sense. That popularity is also its main challenge, so planning matters. Reserving free timed tickets online well in advance is the difference between walking right in and waiting in a long standby line, especially on weekends. Once inside you can take your time, and because the museum sits in the thick of the Grand Avenue cultural corridor, it slots neatly into a day that also includes Disney Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and a meal at nearby Grand Central Market.

6. Hollywood Walk of Fame and the TCL Chinese Theatre

430+ Tcl Chinese Theatre Stock Photos, Pictures & Royalty-Free Images - iStock | Los angeles, Hollywood, Hollywood sign

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is pure Los Angeles, for better and for both. Stretching for about a mile and a half along Hollywood Boulevard and a section of Vine Street, the sidewalks hold more than 2,600 brass-and-terrazzo stars honoring actors, musicians, directors, and other figures from the entertainment world. Hunting for the names you grew up admiring is a simple, free pleasure, and it is one of those things almost everyone does once when they come to LA. Locals may roll their eyes at how touristy it is, but seeing it in person is part of the city's rite of passage.

The anchor of the strip is the TCL Chinese Theatre, formerly Grauman's, an ornate 1927 movie palace whose forecourt is famous for the handprints, footprints, and signatures of Hollywood legends pressed into the concrete. Standing where stars literally left their mark, and fitting your own hands into the impressions, is a genuinely fun moment. Steps away is the Dolby Theatre, the permanent home of the Academy Awards, where you can take a tour or simply photograph the spot where the Oscars are handed out each year. The surrounding blocks are packed with souvenir shops, the Hollywood and Highland complex, and street performers in costume who will pose for tips.

This is the stop that benefits most from managing expectations and timing. The area is busiest and warmest in the afternoon, so going in the morning means thinner crowds and better light for photos. It is a working urban stretch, so keep an eye on your belongings and your wallet, and treat the costumed characters as optional photo ops rather than obligations, since they expect a tip. A little wandering off the main drag, up toward the El Capitan Theatre or the historic side streets, rewards you with a calmer slice of old Hollywood.

7. Santa Monica Pier and Beach

The Perfect One-Day Adventure at Santa Monica Pier, LA - Klook Travel Blog

When you picture a Southern California beach day, you are probably picturing Santa Monica. The pier has been a fixture since 1909, and today it packs a surprising amount onto its wooden planks. Pacific Park, the small amusement park at the end, is the centerpiece, with a solar-powered Ferris wheel that has become a symbol of the coastline, a roller coaster with ocean views, and a classic midway of games and rides. Below the deck you will find an aquarium run by the conservation group Heal the Bay, and at the pier's entrance stands the official sign marking the western end of historic Route 66, the spot where the great cross-country road finally meets the sea.

Beyond the pier itself, the appeal is the setting. The wide, sandy beach beside it is ideal for a long walk, a swim in the summer, or simply watching the surfers and the sunset. The beachfront bike path, known as the Marvin Braude trail, runs for miles in both directions, and renting a bike or scooter to ride south toward the funkier boardwalk at Venice Beach is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon here. Back from the sand, the Third Street Promenade offers open-air shopping, street musicians, and plenty of places to eat, so you can easily fill a full day without driving anywhere else.

This is the farthest stop on this list from our office, and the westside traffic means the drive deserves a little planning, but the payoff is real. Arrive before late morning to find parking more easily, and bring a layer or two, because the coast often runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler than Glendale and the inland valleys, with morning fog that usually clears by midday. Sunset over the water, with the Ferris wheel lighting up behind you, is one of those quintessential LA moments worth the trip.

8. Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County - Discover La Mirada California

In Exposition Park just south of downtown, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is a longtime favorite for families and anyone with a curious streak. As the largest natural and historical museum in the western United States, it covers an enormous range, but the undisputed star is the Dinosaur Hall, a soaring two-story gallery filled with mounted skeletons. The centerpiece is a remarkable growth series of Tyrannosaurus rex specimens, from a young juvenile to a full-grown adult, posed in a dramatic confrontation that stops every visitor in their tracks. For kids who love dinosaurs, and the adults who secretly do too, it is hard to beat.

Beyond the dinosaurs, the museum keeps surprising you. The Gem and Mineral Hall holds a vault of glittering crystals and a serious collection of gold. The Age of Mammals gallery traces sixty-five million years of evolution, and the Becoming Los Angeles exhibit tells the sprawling story of the city itself. Outside, the Nature Gardens turn three and a half acres into a living exhibit of local plants and wildlife, a calm green space where you might spot hummingbirds and butterflies. Rotating special exhibitions, plus hands-on spaces like the Nature Lab and a butterfly pavilion in season, mean there is usually something new even for repeat visitors.

One of the best things about this stop is its location in Exposition Park, which makes it easy to pair with another world-class attraction next door. The California Science Center sits a short walk away, offers free general admission, and is home to the Space Shuttle Endeavour, a genuine spacecraft you can stand beneath, though its display has been moving toward a new vertical installation, so it is worth checking the current status before you go. Between the two institutions and the park's rose garden, you can easily build a rich, low-cost day out for the whole family.

9. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens

The Incredible Chinese Gardens at Huntington Library - Traveling Archive

Just over the hill in San Marino, The Huntington is one of the most beautiful places in all of Southern California, and at roughly nine miles it is the closest major attraction to our Glendale office. Built around the former estate of railroad magnate Henry Huntington, it combines a world-class research library, fine art galleries, and 130 acres of botanical gardens into a single, serene destination. It is the kind of place locals bring out-of-town guests to show off the region at its most refined, and it rewards a slow, unhurried visit.

The gardens are the heart of the experience, and they are extraordinary. There are more than a dozen themed landscapes, but a few are unforgettable. The Japanese Garden, with its moon bridge, koi ponds, and historic house, is a study in tranquility. The Chinese Garden, called the Garden of Flowing Fragrance, is one of the largest of its kind outside China, woven with pavilions, bridges, and a central lake. The Desert Garden feels like stepping onto another planet, with thousands of cacti and succulents in surreal shapes. Add a rose garden, a subtropical jungle, and a children's garden, and you could spend an entire day outdoors and never see it all.

Indoors, the institution is just as impressive. The library displays genuine treasures, including a Gutenberg Bible and early manuscripts of major literary works, while the art galleries hold European and American masterpieces, most famously Thomas Gainsborough's The Blue Boy. The setting throughout is gracious and calm, with a tea room for a classic afternoon tea and plenty of benches to simply sit and take it in. Because it is so beloved and entry is timed, booking tickets in advance is essential, especially on weekends. Aim for a weekday morning if you can, wear comfortable shoes for all that walking, and give yourself permission to linger.

10. Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art | WIZARD GALLERY

LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, and its presence stretches well beyond its galleries into the cultural identity of the city. Even people who have never gone inside recognize Urban Light, the installation of 202 restored cast-iron street lamps arranged in rows out front. Created by artist Chris Burden, it has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Los Angeles, free to walk through at any hour and especially striking after dark when the lamps glow against the night. It is the kind of public artwork that draws couples, photographers, and curious passersby in equal measure.

Inside, the collection is vast and global, spanning thousands of years and nearly every continent, with strong holdings in Latin American art, Asian art, Islamic art, and modern and contemporary work. The campus has been undergoing a major, multi-year transformation, with a striking new building for the permanent collection reshaping the heart of the complex, so the exact layout and which galleries are open can vary from visit to visit. The rotating special exhibitions are consistently ambitious and often the main reason locals return, so it is always worth checking what is on before you go. Another beloved outdoor piece, Levitated Mass, a 340-ton boulder suspended over a walkway, sits on the grounds and is free to experience.

The location is part of the appeal. LACMA anchors the Miracle Mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard, which puts it within easy reach of several other attractions. The La Brea Tar Pits and its Ice Age fossils are right next door, and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, devoted to the art and history of film, is steps away. That cluster makes the area an easy place to build a full day around art, science, and movie history without moving your car. Between the free outdoor installations and the deep collection inside, LACMA offers something for nearly every kind of visitor.

A Few Practical Tips for Getting Around Los Angeles

Los Angeles rewards a little planning. A few things our team has learned over the years:

  • Time your drives. The difference between leaving at 9 in the morning and leaving at 5 in the evening can be an hour. Mornings and early afternoons are your friends.

  • Parking adds up. Many attractions charge for parking even when admission is free, so budget for it or look at rideshare for downtown trips.

  • Layer up near the coast. The beach can run 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Glendale and the valleys, especially in the morning marine layer.

  • Cluster your stops. Downtown pairs Disney Hall, The Broad, and the museums in Exposition Park. The Miracle Mile pairs LACMA with the La Brea Tar Pits and the Academy Museum. Grouping nearby spots saves you hours.

  • Book ahead. The most popular stops, including The Broad, The Huntington, and the Getty on weekends, use timed tickets that sell out, so reserve before you go.

Best Times of Year to Visit Los Angeles

Welcome to Downtown LA | Visit DTLA | DTLA Alliance

One of the perks of Los Angeles is that there is no truly bad season, but a few patterns are worth knowing. Spring, roughly March through May, is arguably the sweet spot: the hills are green, the weather is mild, and the summer crowds have not arrived yet. Fall, from September into November, is a close second, with warm days, cooler evenings, and thinner lines at the big attractions.

Summer brings the most visitors and the highest prices, along with real heat in the inland valleys, though the coast stays comfortable thanks to the ocean breeze. If you come in summer, save the beach stops for the hottest afternoons and the indoor museums for midday. Early summer mornings near the coast often start gray with what locals call the marine layer, which usually burns off by lunchtime.

Winter is the quiet season and a genuinely good time to visit. Rain is occasional rather than constant, the air is often at its clearest, and you will share Griffith Observatory and The Getty with far fewer people. Pack a light jacket for the evenings and you are set.

Why a Local IT Company Wrote a Travel Guide

Fair question. The honest answer is that we are proud to be part of this community. GenCare has worked alongside Los Angeles businesses since 1986, from Glendale and across the wider region, and the same things that make this a great place to visit make it a great place to build a business. Every landmark on this list runs on technology behind the scenes, from ticketing systems to security cameras to the networks that keep their teams connected, and that is the world we live in every day.

We help local organizations with the technology that keeps them running, including managed IT services, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365, and IT consulting. If you want to see all the communities we cover, our areas we serve page has the full list. And if you are exploring the city, we hope this guide points you somewhere memorable.

Visiting or Running a Business in Los Angeles?

If you are just visiting, enjoy the city. Start with whichever stop is closest to where you are staying, and build your day around it. Our team's quiet favorites, if you are short on time, are Griffith Observatory at sunset and The Huntington on a calm weekday morning.

If you run a business in Los Angeles or the surrounding area and your technology feels more like a headache than a help, that is where we come in. GenCare has been the steady, local IT partner for Southern California organizations since 1986, with a 5.0 rating across more than 100 Google reviews and a 15-minute response target when something needs attention.

Call (855) 634-5557 or start the conversation, and we will give you a clear, no-pressure look at your technology. We are right here in Glendale, and we would be glad to help.
